What a day! This afternoon we participated in the costume parade and then an InMotion activity in the gym. Afterwards, in the classroom we had some fun with some Halloween writing and other activities. Students were given a card today that they can show to people when they trick-or-treat tonight to explain the We Scare Hunger initiative. Food items can be brought to school tomorrow. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!

We Scare Hunger
This morning we had an assembly and were introduced to a new initiative that the school will be participating in for Halloween. The initiative is We Scare Hunger. Students are asked to ask for non-perishable food items instead of candy when they trick or treat on Thursday night. The food items can be brought to the school to be tallied. The goal is for each student to collect at least one item. The food will be donated to the local food bank.
Thanks for your support at home!

Les expressions
Each week, we have been learning a new idiomatic expression in French. Here is a summary of the expressions we have learned to date:
A tes souhaits!/A vos souhaits! - used when someone sneezes (tes is used for friends, family, while vos is used to be more polite)
avoir une faim de loup (to be as hungry as a wolf) - used when very hungry
quoi de neuf? (what's up?) - used with friends/family only
avoir du pain sur la planche (literally translated: to have bread on the cutting board) - said when there is a lot to do
avoir la tete dans les nuages (literally translated: to have ones head in the clouds) - used when someone is daydreaming, or lost in their thoughts

Les biographies
Over the past 2 weeks we have been learning about writing biographies. Students interviewed and wrote about their calipartenaires in grade 5/6. Everyone did such a fantastic job! They will be posted outside of our classroom for everyone to enjoy. Be sure to check them out next time you are in the school!
Halloween
Thursday is Halloween!
Students are welcome to wear their costumes in the afternoon. We will be having a costume parade and then participating in an In Motion activity as a school in the gym. For the remainder of the afternoon we will be doing some Halloween themed activities. If you wish to send a healthy treat for our Halloween celebrations please feel free to do so.
Please be reminded that costumes are not to depict gore or violence.
After school, the Home and School will be hosting an event at the school:

A few reminders for this week:
-Au courant journals should come back to school on Tuesday
-Home Reading Books will be coming home on Tuesday and are due back at school on Friday
-Library on Friday. Bring back your books if you wish to exchange them for new ones.
-Spirit Day on Friday. Students are invited to wear their pyjamas on Friday.
-This week we will be having our first dictee. Dictee is French for spelling test. The list of words will be stapled into the agenda on Tuesday to be practiced at home, as well as in the blog post for the week. Since this week is the first, there will only be a few common words. As we go on, the dictees will focus on a phonetic sound and the corresponding letters. There will be an extra word each week to ensure students have mastered the sound and spelling. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let me know by way of the agenda, phone, email or in person.

Frances Morrison Library Outing
Just a reminder that we are going to the public library on Wednesday afternoon. I have one parent who has offered to come along, and I could still use another if anyone is able to join us. We will be leaving soon after lunch (12:40pm) and returning around 3:00pm.
Students will need to be dressed to walk there and back, and will also need to bring their library cards.

Doubles
Today for math we started practicing our doubles facts. Knowing doubles will help students to add two digit numbers to 100.
Here are some games we played today on the SmartBoard.

Busy Friday!
What a day! This morning started with an assembly to kick off the QSP Magazine Fundraiser. There is an envelope with all the information in your child's sac bleu tonight. Monday is the first collection day, and is also double day (each subscription counts as double points for prizes).
We went to the library and are still working on choosing 'les livres de bon choix'. Mme Hushagen told a really funny story about being embarassed.
This afternoon we went on a little walk with our calipartenaires. It was great to get some exercise and to enjoy the beautiful crisp fall day.
This week in Grade 2 we have been learning some expressions in French. When someone sneezes, we say 'a tes souhaits' or 'a vos souhaits'. When we are really hungry we say 'J'ai une faim de loup'.

Dix
Over the past few days we have been working on different ways to make the number 10. Here are a few games we have played:
http://www.ictgames.com/save_the_whale_v4.html
http://www.coolmath-games.com/0-number-twins/addition-practice-10.html
Having a strong understanding of the number ten is important for learning to do two digit addition to 100 with regrouping.
